The new Scissor Sisters single 'Only The Horses' is very good

Ok so here's the thing.  The Scissor Sisters rock our socks.  There was a time when Calvin Harris did too, but now that everything in the world sounds exactly like a Calvin Harris song, the sock rocking has diminished significantly.

Which presents us with a conundrum.  The amazing Scissor Sisters, who are known for their singular viewpoint and unique take on modern pop, have joined forces with the still-amazing-but-overexposed Calvin Harris who makes everything sound like...well, a Calvin Harris song. 

Is it amazing?  Or is it annoying because the Sisters' sound has been diluted by "the machine" that is radio-friendly pop schlock?  The answer is that in the broader context of "THE STATE OF POP MUSIC" it is a very good version of something we've heard a million times before, albeit with a lot more soul than the usual autotuned garbage that litters the charts.  In isolation, though, when examined on its own musical merits, it is a tremendous feat of pop, and maybe just the thing to rid the Scissors of the stink of failure that still clings to them from their last album.

Plus there are sure to be some stomping remixes so to be completely honest it really doesn't matter how good the song is (even though we have already established that it is, in fact, very good).  Even if it was a hulking pile of absolute shit, the gays would still get some good shirts-off poppers-o-clock discowhistle action out of it, and at the end of the day isn't that what really matters?

The answer, of course, is no, but whatever.

Remarkably, things happen in the world of music EVEN WHEN WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THEM, and here are a few of those things:

- Lady Gaga's new video is getting unanimously 'meh' reviews.  It's slick and well put together, but it's....a little boring.  When people point and Gaga and say "but anybody could have done that," she has a problem.  (Star Observer)

Poor Scissor Sisters. 

Actually no, not poor Scissor Sisters.  Sure, their last album flopped in the UK and Europe, where the American band had found their only success, but now they're upping their game in their homeland with a supporting stint for LADY EFFING GAGA, and that kinda makes up for any amount of floppage no matter how horrifically their latest single crashed and burned (number 81, in case you were wondering).

To get all the Yanks - who have more or less ignored their existence altogether - prepared for their peculiarly awesome brand of funky pop, the group has decided to let everyone get a nice five-track sampler of their tunes for ABSOLUTELY FREE.  Included on it is the actually brilliant 'Invisible Light,' which is being tauted as the track that will turn things around for the band - and it very well might do it, too.  With a NSFW video (titties!) and a killer hook (sing along to titties!), it's certainly well on its way already.

They also did a "clean version" of the video too (no titties :( ), which is understandably far less fun, but we get that some of you out there "work" or whatever, so here it is, 100% boob-free:

it's not easy being a queen

ScopiSat has been under the weather the last week (read: ACTUALLY DYING) so we apologize for the lack of posts.  But to make up for it we have a doozy for you.

Scissor Sisters' current album campaign didn't exactly go to plan, with lead single 'Fire With Fire' missing the UK top ten and the follow up single 'Any Which Way' charting outside the Top 75 all together.  Since they don't have to (can't really) worry about commercial success at the moment, the Sisters have decided to go super ARTSY and CUTTING EDGE and ALIENATING in a bid to either exorcise some of their inner sex demons, reclaim their status as cultural "outsiders," or both. 

'Invisible Light' is a disco-electro (let's face it, it's Scissor Sisters, we all know what we're getting) romp but to be honest it's nothing particularly special.  Perhaps that's why they chose to pair it with a video that combines some pretty dark themes with full-on nudity and turkey-eating.

We have to admit we're totally digging the video, and the song is growing on us.  Maybe the Sisters haven't shot their wad after all?

Scissor Sisters' album launch has been a bit of a misfire this go-round, if only for lack of an iconic and accessible lead single.  This seems to be the way of the world these days, however, as artists have realized that once they achieve huge success there is a pressure to perform to that level - a level that almost always is a fluke and almost never is repeatable.  One way to get around that is to, on the next album, "soft launch" a record and manage expectations by not being as in-your-face as most blockbuster artists are.  A media blitz and corker of a single may get a lot of attention, but chances are the impact won't live up to the prior album's glory right off the bat.  And nothing stings harder or makes better headlines than an EPIC ALBUM CAMPAIGN that results in tepid sales (yes, that's Christina Aguilera you hear being thrown under the bus right now).  To avoid that stink of "flop," artists and record companies have realized that if they don't try so hard, no one slates the record for not being as big as the one prior.  Cue the Scissor Sisters' 'Night Work,' a solid collection of tunes that makes for a great follow-up.  Since there really was nowhere to go from their last LP but down, the band have scaled things back a bit and allowed themselves room to grow.  Because nothing is more claustrophobic than a pop act's huge success.

Anyhoodle, long story short, the Sisters have a new single and video out and both are very amazing.  The song features KYLIE ON BACKING VOCALS and the video features HOT SHIRTLESS MEN AND NEON COLORS.  Quite obviously both are incredible.

We're quite liking the Scissor Sisters' reinvention as a less-falsetto-y, less Bee Gees, still camp-as-Christmas rock dance (rance?) collective.  The first single off their new album hits our sweet spot, and though some have decried the fact it's slightly less danceable and a lot less kitsch than previous tracks, ScopiSat thinks it's a great representation of a band that is growing musically.  The video matches this pared-down, more organic sound, trading in the crazy outfits and makeup for a nice, low key tour around New York City. The Scissor Sisters are BACK and BETTER THAN EVER with 'Fire With Fire' - watch them perform the new single now!

The music world has been abuzz for a few weeks now about the new Scissor Sisters stuff, and to be honest we here at ScopiSat were a little hesitant.  We always kind of appreciated SS's quirky, campy brand of rock, but never really connected with any of their tracks.  It's always been something of an embarrassment, really, because while "the blogs" and "the gays" all went on and on at length about the genius of the Sisters, we would cower in a corner, cradling our Girls Aloud records and wondering where exactly our upbringing went wrong. 

But hark!  That's all about to change, it seems, as 'Fire With Fire' finds the band exploring a straightforward, glitzed up pop-a-thon that we can TOTES get on board with.  Check out the band performing the new single at NYC's Bowery Ballroom:



It sounds like poppers and shame-sex on a dancefloor, and is therefore AMAZING.
