Whitney.

There once was a boy from the Midwest who was shielded from everything.  From culture, from music, from anything having to do with the big bad world.  He lived his life totally ignorant of the world of “pop,” until one day after church he sat with his Baptist Minister father, his mother and his sister, in a Michigan Taco Bell.

Nacho in hand, the boy suddenly looked up and, wide-eyed, stared out the window in a blissful haze.  Because on the radio was something like he’d never heard – something that, one way or another, he was determined to hear more of.

The boy went out, bought the cassingle of the track he’d heard, ran home to his boombox, and put it on repeat for what must have seemed to his parents to be the next few years, but in reality was probably more like 3 weeks or so.  It was a song that literally changed his life – that opened up a whole new world to him.  It was called “I Will Always Love You,” and it was sung by Whitney Houston.

Whitney was the boy’s first pop concert – he dragged his parents with him to the Pontiac Silverdome late in 1993.  Whitney was how the boy first experienced true raw emotion through music.  And Whitney was, in one way or another, the soundtrack to his teenage years.

He'd been a musician all his life - he started playing piano ten years earlier, at age 3 -  but the second he heard the sound coming out of that Taco Bell speaker he knew he wanted to do pop.  And when he finally bought “The Bodyguard” soundtrack CD – his first pop album ever – he flipped over the case, looked at the address of the label, Arista Records, and wrote the company a letter asking how he could be a star just like Whitney.

The letter never got answered, of course, but the seed of his dream had been sown.  Whitney awoke something in him that set him down the path he still walks today.  As a teen he sat in his parents' Audi and blew out the speakers blasting "One Moment In Time," because he was determined to have just one moment of his very own.  He became a published songwriter, a TV host, an entertainment lawyer, and music blogger, all, in some strange way, because Whitney Houston told him he could.

One could argue that if it hadn’t been Whitney it would have been someone else.  But the point is it wasn’t someone else.  She had something special that crossed over where nothing had before, and reached into the sheltered life of an adolescent kid and shook him out of his ignorant sleep.

Even though they drifted apart in later years, she was always there.  In the background at a restaurant, on the screen at a bar.  And recently, with her semi-successful comeback, “Million Dollar Bill,” she even ended up with the unofficial song of his summer.

Now she’s gone, and the boy is realizing just how much a part of his life Whitney really was, and just how much he owes to her. How everything was different before she came into his life, and how different things would be today if she never had.

So, to Whitney, now that you're asleep:  Thank you for waking that boy up.

Chart Chat UK: Oct 25, 2009

The UK Top Five is quite diva-heavy this week, as we see a reality show contestant one-two punch at the top.  Alexandra Burke, the X-Factor winner, slides down to number two with her Flo Rida collaboration 'Bad Boys,' giving up the top slot to Popstars: The Rivals winner/X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole.  Cole's debut single, despite being rather divisive, was always going to make a big splash, and splash it does, with 290,000 copies sold - over 130,000 of those on its first day of release.  Thus it becomes the fastest selling single of 2009, and handily thrusts Cole into the 'Top Stars' bracket.  At 4 we have Robbie Williams, whose comeback has been described by the media as both an epic failure and a spectacular win.  In reality it's probably somewhere in the middle, but it must be encouraging to all involved that 'Bodies' didn't fall off the face of the earth after its debut last week.  The number 5 spot brings us to another artist whose comeback has been a bit questionable.  Whitney Houston, once one of the most bankable singers (and actresses) in the business, has fallen on some difficult times in recent years.  You might have heard about it.  If not, here's the short version:  Whitney married Bobby Brown, did some crack, stopped eating, divorced Bobby Brown, and may or may not have quit doing drugs.  In any case, her first official comeback single, 'Million Dollar Bill' hardly set the charts on fire out of the gate.  But a few weeks on and an AMAZING and shambolic X-Factor performance later, the song vaults up 9 spots to grab Whit's first UK top 5 since 2000.  The rest of the top 10 is pretty uneventful, with some minor shuffles of weeks-old tracks, save for the number 10 entry from Young Soul Rebels.  The not-unpleasant 'I Got Soul' isn't anything to write home about, but it's better than another Black Eyed Peas track isn't it.  The Saturdays continue their swift descent, down 6 to 14, just below Shakira who drops 5 down to 12.  17 and 20 see new entries this week, with Cobra Starship's 'Good Girls Go Bad' and Alphabeat's 'The Spell,' impacting the chart.  This is likely as far as both tracks will go, as each were fully released this week.  For Cobra Starship this is a great result, while Alphabeat has to be a bit disappointed with such a lowly position for their 2nd album's lead-off single.  Christina Aguilera's 'Hurt' enjoys another run at the top 40, re-entering at 25, thanks to its performance on X-Factor, and at 36 we find Lostprophets, whose 'It's Not The End of the World...' faceplants down a full 20 places.

The UK Top Ten:
1 - Cheryl Cole: Fight For This Love
2 - Alexandra Burke: Bad Boys
3 - Chipmunk: Oopsy Daisy
4 - Robbie Williams: Bodies
5 - Whitney Houston: Million Dollar Bill
6 - Taio Cruz: Break Your Heart
7 - Black Eyed Peas: I Gotta Feeling
8 - Jay-Z: Empire State Of Mind
9 - Michael Buble: Haven't Met You Yet
10- Young Soul Rebels: I Got Soul

Musings re: Whitney's crack-tastic X-Factor performance (video)

Some choice moments from tonight's shambolic but somehow still absolutely immense performance of 'Million Dollar Bill':

1.  Whit's obvious lack of Spanx.  You're on live television.  Wear a girdle.
2.  Whit's absolute refusal to sing any notes outside a one-octave range.
3.  The 'crack-ho on the dance-flo' moves during the chorus
4.  Whit's finally noticing that her bra has LITERALLY SNAPPED OPEN at 3:10
5.  The fact that anyone allowed Whit to speak at the end
6.  Whit not actually knowing when her album comes out
7.  Whit's 'Ima cut you, Simon' moment at 6:00
8.  Whit basically calling the contestants utter and complete shit

Ten out of ten, babe.  Ten out of ten.

Watch Whitney's 'Million Dollar' video

This is Whit's new video. In it she goes to the dry cleaner and sings to people in the basement because that is the only way to become famous again after you go on a crack binge and marry Bobby Brown. :(

Also she looks like a REALLY GOOD Whitney Houston drag queen.

Good to have you back, Miss H.

Watch Whitney's new video

Here is Whitney's 'long awaited' video for "I Look To You." It's all a bit 'pancake makeup and budget constraints' but we're not sure what else we should have expected. We also can't decide if the fact that it looks like a drag performance is a plus or minus. Vexing, this video. Vexing indeed.

Asbury gays see your Miley and raise you a Whitney in 'Million Dollar Bill' video

It was bound to happen. We all knew it would. In fact we're a little surprised it didn't happen earlier. The knockoffs of the brilliant 'Party in the FIP' have begun, and first up is Whitney's 'Million Dollar Bill.' This time the scene is Asbury Park, the gay mecca of......New Jersey. It's derivative and contrived. It's got attitude but no class. It's queenier, bitchier and way lower budget. So that's about right for a Whitney project then isn't it...

After what the FIP video did for Miley in the gay world (it's blaring off every well-appointed rooftop in NYC this summer), do you think 'Million Dollar Bill' is set for the same gay-jam status?

Whitney goes a little less crack and a little more meth and poppers

Whitney's official comeback single gets the remix treatment, and I think we all know that the result is amazing. Even as the song languishes on the charts, at least it will be blasting out of the speakers at all the gays' rooftop parties this Labor Day...

The single is out now...not that anyone noticed

Whitney struggles through a pretty fun song

The whole Whitney comeback train suffered a setback with that messy ballad she put out first, but this new, Alicia Keys-penned disco-y track is a lot more fun. What's up with the voice though? Crack kills, kids.
