There are times when a headline is wholly inadequate to sum up an entire post.

This is not one of those times.  For here, indeed, is a thing by David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Flo-Rida.

It is not a bad thing.  It is also not a great thing.  It is, however, a decently adequate thing.  And that is...ok.

The song is a pretty by-the-numbers Guetta affair (as a side note, he is increasingly in danger of having such a notable sound that we will soon be able to say "it's very 'Guetta' " and everyone will just KNOW, much in the way something could once be "very Fatboy Slim," or more recently "very RedOne") which is to say it's your standard well-executed-but-ultimately-average dance track with some impressive guest vocals.  And also Flo-Rida. :(

In keeping with the theme of "alright," the video is your run of the mill THINGS HAPPENING IN LA WITH A CAMERA FILTER ON THEM clip, with a little CGI thrown in because it's a dance video and people who like dance music enjoy that sort of thing.

So no it's not going to set the world aflame, but what we do have here is a solid addition to any playlist and a quite serviceable video for "the clubs."  And we should all quit our bitching and be thankful for that, because THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS DYING* and in this day and age it's a wonder that we get anything at all.

Can YOU spot the one that doesn't belong?

Kelly Rowland, the failed TV show host who was in a girl group or something back in the 2000's, has really got this "summer smash" thing down, hasn't she?  First it was 2009's 'When Love Takes Over,' then last summer's 'Commander.'  And now Miss Rowland has unveiled what is sure to be the unescapable soundtrack to the warmer months of 2011: a poppers-o-clock, hands-in-the-air, shirts-off/glitter-on, BONA FIDE JAM called  'What A Feeling.'

And WHAT A FEELING IT IS.  Kelly certainly knows what tracks she does best, and those are middle-of-the-road dance anthems that will please the gays and most of Europe, but don't rock the musical boat in the least.  She's also smart enough to know that she doesn't quite have the credibility to sell a club track on her own, so she's once again paired up with hot DJ David Guetta Alex Gaudino.

The track is all POUNDING and BOUNCING and KELLY YELLING INTO A MICROPHONE but in a "musical way" and will undoubtedly have some sort of fantastically camp video to accompany it just in time for Memorial Day.  So, essentially what we're getting is 'Commander Mk II,' but we're pretty sure that the throngs of shirtless men on Fire Island who file their tax returns as "Gap Sales Associate - slash - Broadway actor" won't mind.

Kelly Rowland (pictured above pretending she is Toni Braxton for some reason) is back with a brand new video for 'Commander,' and it is big, bold, cheesy, cheap and a little bit amazing but in an oddly crap way.  It starts with a sort of 80's kitschy-ness, but at the same time has the sugary gloss of a budget Euro-dance clip - you know, the ones that cast lingerie models as 'dancers' and are by bands named things like 'Groove All Star Rave Junkies'.  Then in the middle it goes a bit 'Destiny's Child except with only Kelly' split screen-y and then she jumps through some safety glass and it ends. 

Regardless of the video's relative shortcomings, it certainly ticks all the boxes for what it was meant to do.  For once Kelly looks self-assured and comes off as an actual grown woman in charge of herself and her career.  Just the other day we were at a dinner party and agreed with our friend who said Miss Rowland would never really make it as a club act. But suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, it seems as if this whole 'dance diva makeover' might work after all.

Kelly Rowland looked quite down and out for a while.  Second fiddle to Beyonce after Destiny's Child disbanded, she had a couple decent hits and the pop world readied to put her out to pasture.  Non-charting singles, C-list TV appearances and cruise ship concerts awaited.  Enter David Guetta, who made the soulful singer over into a dance diva, and in the process rejuvenated a career that so easily could have ended with a 'Where Are They Now' camera crew visiting her at a Georgia Wal*Mart.  'When Love Takes Over' became a smash US dance hit, a chart topper worldwide, and served as the sound of the summer for many a slightly fey gentleman. 


That single coincided with her departure with both her manager and her label, and since then Kelly has signed with Universal Motown.  Somebody at their offices knows what they're doing, as Miss Rowland's new direction capitalizes on her newfound club popularity.  'Commander' is a pulsing club banger, again produced by David Guetta, and joins the Kylie and Kelis releases in making 2010 the year dance was well and truly back. 

As songs tend to do, 'Commander' has received a video treatment.  Filmed in the beginning of May, it was directed by Masahahi Muto (behind some very awesome adverts and clips), and it looks to be QUITE GOOD.  One insider said about the clip, ""Kelly’s look in this video is just utterly sexy. It’s like a jungle feel. I feel like we’re in Avatar somewhere, running through the woods, minus the blue paint."

It is called 'Memories,' and even though it's not really memorable it's an okay way to pass a few minutes.

The top two stays the same this week, as both Taio Cruz and David Guetta hold steady at 1 and 2 respectively. At 3, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys leap up 12 places with 'Empire State of Mind', and kick Madonna all the way down to 8 with her latest, 'Celebration.' Shakira edges up a spot with 'She Wolf,' flip-flopping with Jay-Z's last hit, 'Run This Town,' which hangs on at 5 and gives Mr. -Z his second top five hit this week. The Black Eyed Peas refuse to let go of their chart death-grip (which is thankfully less severe than in the U.S. where they have spent a full 6 months at the top with their last two tracks), and back up the chart to 6. Mini Viva hangs on to a top ten placing for one more week, as 'Left My Heart In Tokyo' slides to 10. I think everyone was a bit surprised at its success, and more so at its staying power. Our first new entry is at 11, as Dizzee Rascal continues his chart onslaught with 'Dirtee Cash.' The song isn't even an official single yet, but its impending release has set downloaders' hearts aflutter. My guess is this song's future is looking rather good. At 12 we find Temper Trap, with their lovely 'Sweet Disposition' pushing up another few places. The Australian band may just crack the top ten if this unconventional chart trajectory continues. Released all the back in 2008, 'Disposition' this week manages its highest chart placing yet. Not a lot else is going on, save for the number 35 entry for new Sugababes member Jade Ewen. With all the 'babes drama, this single was more or less dumped - its release more a contractual obligation than an effort to have a hit - so a top 40 placing isn't the end of the world. Jade just recorded vocals on the Sugababes next single, which in our opinion is one of their best yet, so Ms. Ewen has nothing to worry about.

Another week, another new number 1. David Guetta and Akon couldn't fend off the challenge from garage master Dizzee Rascal's new jam 'Holiday,' and find themselves relegated to the number 2 spot this week. Nothing else really is going on in the top ten, to be honest, save the appearance of Biffy Clyro's 'That Golden Rule' noisefest clocking in at number 10. 14 and 15 find a pair of tracks that certainly were hoping for better this week. First up is Lily Allen whose latest single '22' limps to 14 after a full release. After the top 5 successes of her last two tunes, Lily was probably hoping to extend her run, but either everyone who cares already bought the album (likely) or the song just isn't one of her best (also likely). Next we find Just Jack at 15 with 'The Day I Died.' In contrast to Lily's track, this one is quite a gem and it seems almost unfair that it looks unlikely to beat last week's peak of 11. Not quite the comeback the rapper/singer was hoping for, no doubt, but my guess is the album will fare much better. A side note at 31, Temper Trap clock in with their 2008 number 20 hit 'Sweet Disposition.' The song has been a staple in football adverts for a while now, and the song's use in ads for last week's V Festival seems to have pushed it back into the limelight. All bets are on this one falling off the face of the Earth next week, but another reminder of the importance of licensing in today's music industry.

Lots of action on the chart this week, as there is a new number 1 and some up-and comers down below. David Guetta, fresh off of his (UK) success with Kelly Rowland, tosses another collaboration up 20 places this week as 'Sexy Chick' ft. Akon is the UK's number 1 song. This means Black Eyed Peas are down to number 2, just ahead of Tinchy Stryder. Little Boots moves up to 6 upon the full release of 'Remedy,' prompting her to Tweet her plans to down 6 shots in celebration. With all the hype that's lead up to this, those shots are well-deserved. These days an artist that fulfills the expectations of their buzz seems the exception rather than the rule. One place below is Esmee Denters. ScopiSat doesn't get the appeal of this Dutch songstress, as it seems like she's tossing out the kind of American-sounding songs that a number of acts are doing bigger and better. Still, look for more from this one, as Justin Timberlake is the man behind the curtain of the Esmee machine. Just Jack appears at number 11 with his comeback track 'The Day I Died,' and it would be unwise to bet against a top 10 appearance come this time next week. Lily Allen languishes down at 23 with '22,' (yes, we were all hoping it would be number 22 this week as well) but will get a boost from the physical release of her single. Still, with this placing she'll be lucky to trouble the upper regions of the chart. Top 20 is about the best she can hope for this one.

A flip-flop at the top this week, and a couple of top tens that are interesting, albeit for wildly different reasons.
Black Eyed Peas return to number 1 with 'I Gotta Feeling,' pushing Tinchy Stryder down to 2. Calvin Harris' new jam debuts at number 3, and while it can't extend to three his string of number 1's, this happy dance track serves as a nice promo for his new album due out next week. One place below and we find a man whose music career has been overshadowed by his tabloid appearances. Peter Andre had a surprisingly healthy run of hits in the 90's as a pin-up, ever-shirtless hottie, before he faded into obscurity, only to be thrust back into the limelight by an appearance on 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' and subsequent marriage to fellow contestant and glamour girl Jordan. Since he re-entered the public eye, Andre's chart fortunes have been mixed, with two top 10's and two also-rans. There always seemed to be a question of whether people were buying his songs because of the music or they hype - especially this time around. This number 4 placing for new single 'Behind Closed Doors' comes on the heels of his very public marriage breakdown and does very little to answer that question. The Ian Carey Project manages to improve on last week's number 10 showing, moving up a place to 9. At number 10 we find the first top 10 for ScopiSat fave Little Boots. 'Remedy' finally gives the hotly-tipped singer a solid hit, with the single's full release still a day away. There's not a lot of action in the rest of the chart, but there are a few tracks to watch. David Guetta's track with Akon bows at 21, right above Noisettes who can't seem to break through the number 20 barrier with 'Never Forget You.' Frankmusik sticks around as well, treading water with his latest, 'Confusion Girl.'
