Nelly Furtado's BIG COMEBACK SINGLE is here - listen to the premiere now!

This is an amazing single sleeve.

After cementing her place as a duchess of pop (not quite a princess, but not a Dev either...) with hits like 'I'm Like A Bird' and 'Say It Right,'  Nelly Furtado took her millions of royalty dollars and went off to a spa or something for a few years.  And also recorded a Spanish language album because of course.

But now she's BACK BACK BACK and ready to show these new young whipper snappers how it's done.  Her new single, the kind-of-geniusly titled 'Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)' thankfully eschews the clubland donkfest that somehow has become the droning background noise of the 2010s, and instead goes for an upbeat dancehall vibe with an unexpected drum and bass outro.

It's "very good" in the sense that it sounds like not a lot what's out right now, and also "kind of mediocre" in that it's not the catchiest thing we've heard.  To be fair though, Rihanna made number 1 hits out of far less, so we're not ruling anything out.

Her last appearance on the US singles chart was way back in 2007, so if she's going on name-recognition alone she'll have her work cut out for her. But at the very least, it's nice to hear Nelly's unique vocals coming out of our speakers again.  Now we just have to wait and see if the rest of the world feels the same way.

N.E.R.D. are back - preview their new video with Nelly Furtado!

N.E.R.D. have been off the scene for a while, so ScopiSat did some nosing around (read: wikipedia-ing) to see what they had been up to. The answer is "nothing particularly interesting" but we did find out that as a band, N.E.R.D. have not been nearly as successful as we assumed. The group has never (!!) had a top 100 Billboard single (excluding dance charts) and while their first two albums went Gold, their last has only sold about 250,000 in the U.S. Then we remembered that N.E.R.D. is actually just a side project and two of the three members are actually THE NEPTUNES who produced EVERY NUMBER ONE HIT in America between 2001 and 2006. So they're doing fine.

Anyway, N.E.R.D. has a new song out with Nelly Furtado and they made a video for it. Here's a preview.

It is bass-heavy beats.  It is strobe lighting and smoke machines.  It is poppers-o'clock revelry.  It is a duet by two music heavyweights,  and manages to be the best thing either has put out in ages.  In all its glory, here is 'Who Wants To Be Alone' from Tiesto and Nelly Furtado. 



Turns out, Nelly just needed to put a donk on it.

As far as the song goes, it's a pretty nice diversion.  The cool electro bit where her voice skips somewhere in the middle is particularly fun.  What do you readers think?

Nelly Furtado sings things in Spanish and previews her new album

Here is a short video that showcases each of the tracks on Nelly Furtado's upcoming album. You may notice that the words to the songs are not in English. The words are, in fact, in Spanish. This does not detract from the fact that the songs are quite good, and some native Spanish speakers may feel the language choice actually enhances them. We will leave it to you to decide.



The album, 'Mi Plan,' is out Sept 15 on Universal
